Who is behind the DPI?

It all started over 10 years ago with an idea for an art center, but has sat on the shelf until about 2 years ago. The idea was brought back to life largely due to my connections with the Duluth Photographers Guild, the Duluth-Superior Camera Club, and the North Shore Photo Club where I saw a desire in many people to learn more about photography, both the technical and artistic aspects.

My name is Brian Rauvola and I am the founder of the Duluth Photography Institute. I have been a semi-professional photographer in the Duluth/North Shore area for over 15 years. I operated HBR Studios, a wedding/portrait studio, in Two Harbors until 2006 when I decided to make the break into the realm of freelance photography. This also allowed me to do my first personal work in over a decade! I continue to teach chemistry and math in the area, where I am also the advisor for the student photo club.

While growing up, my love of photography flourished while hiking through woodland areas near my home town in northern Minnesota, but it wasn't until working for a camera dealership and photo lab in Duluth that I was able to see a potential for a business venture. Graduating from UMD and starting teaching gave me the opportunity to purchase more equipment, including studio lighting and modifiers. It wasn't long after this before I started photographing weddings and photojournalism for local newspapers. I opened the portrait/wedding studio in Canal Park (Duluth) in the summer of 1996 and soon after moved it to Two Harbors.
